How many subscribers does a local newsletter need before advertisers will pay?

Short answer

There's no standard number. My rough line for a local newsletter is 3,000 to 4,000 subscribers, where it starts getting legit to advertisers. Past that, no advertiser decides because you hit 25,000. Crossing 10,000 helps mostly because five figures sounds bigger in a pitch. Don't wait for a threshold: start selling and pre-sell.

Everyone wants a number. The honest answer is that it depends on the market, and the number matters less than whether you're selling.

"There is no standard. It's totally dependent."

When does a local list become viable for advertisers?

My rough line is 3,000 to 4,000 subscribers. That's where, for some people, it can start getting legit advertisers. My own newsletters are well past it.

Once you're past that line, a few thousand subscribers either way doesn't change anything. Nobody is going to skip advertising with us because we have 2,000 or 3,000 fewer subscribers.

Does a bigger list change the sale?

Less than you'd think. A partner of mine was chasing a big subscriber goal before monetizing. My pushback: there's no advertiser who's going to hear 25,000 and suddenly decide.

The better move is to sell whatever one-off ads you can now and put that money into Meta ads. Growth becomes revenue neutral, and you have a reason to keep selling. More on that in using ad sales to pay for growth.

Why does 10,000 feel different?

Because it's a round number. When my Round Rock newsletter crossed 10,000, the difference between 9,984 and 10,002 was 18 people. It still felt different. You get an extra digit, and "I have over 10,000" sounds bigger to a business owner.

Five figures is a mental number. Once you're over it, the next step is to get Instagram to 10,000 too. Then you walk into a pitch with two 10,000 audiences and sell a package instead of a single ad. See why advertisers care about Instagram.

MilestoneWhat it does for you
3,000 to 4,000Viable for legit local advertisers
10,000Five figures sounds bigger in every pitch
10,000 newsletter plus 10,000 InstagramTwo audiences to sell as one package

Can a small niche list get advertisers?

Sometimes. A seniors newsletter publisher I talked with told me she had about 500 subscribers and was already getting inbound interest from big advertisers. I haven't verified it. A targeted audience can matter more than size. See niche local newsletters and sponsors.

What should I do instead of waiting?

If someone told you there's a number you need to hit, pre-sell to it. Lock the advertiser in at a price and have them start paying once you get there. I lay that out in how to pre-sell sponsorships. Waiting for a threshold just delays the part that makes money: selling.
