How do I prove my newsletter audience to advertisers?
Short answer
Survey your subscribers and show advertisers the answers. My newsletters can say 55 to 60% are homeowners and about half make over six figures, from readers' own responses. Ask about home ownership, income, kids and pets. With a 'prefer not to say' option, about half of people still share income.
"You can have proof and say, look, this is our audience, I'm not just guessing, they gave us these numbers. 55, 60% are homeowners, 50% make over six figures."
Most local newsletters guess at their audience. A short survey turns the guess into first-party data an advertiser can trust.
What should I ask?
- Own or rent your home? Realtors, builders, home services and insurance all care.
- Household income range. With a "prefer not to say" option.
- Kids at home? Tutors, daycares, family businesses.
- Pets? Pet daycare, groomers, vets.
- Own or run a local business? That finds your own advertisers.
- Plans to buy or sell a home? Turns into real estate leads.
Will people really share their income?
About half will.
"If you have an option for don't want to disclose, we still get about half the people to give us their income numbers."
What does my audience data show?
My newsletters skew upper-middle-class, which is exactly what advertisers want. Across the four newsletters I was running when I first dug into this, readers were roughly 70% female and upper-middle-class, even in one newsletter in a completely different area. Homeownership runs 55 to 60% and about half report six-figure incomes.
That reader profile is why med spas, estate planners and custom home builders are my top targets. See who the best advertisers are.
Can the data prove intent, not just demographics?
Yes. On one new brand, two days after launch, 24 people said they were at least somewhat interested in buying a home now or in the next year. That's a segment a realtor partner can email directly:
I saw you were interested in buying or selling in the next year.
No pressure. [Name] is a realtor I work with, and he's happy to meet you and give you some advice.
Do advertisers actually ask for this?
Rarely. Local advertisers aren't sophisticated, and almost none ask about open rates. But when you walk into a bank or a med spa and say "this is our audience, they told us," you stand apart from everyone selling on guesses. It also powers segmented ads, like selling one slot to two advertisers.
