How do you run a newsletter giveaway that actually gets results?

Short answer

Make the prize big enough to excite people, around $1,000 in value, and package it as an experience people can picture, not a plain gift card. A sponsor's real cost can be $500 or less using open inventory. Then promote it: I'd put about $200 of Meta ads behind it over a week instead of only posting on Instagram.

A $100 or $200 giveaway doesn't excite anyone. A $1,000 prize does. That's the first decision.

"If you gave away a thousand dollar gift card to a med spa ... holy crap, this is not a hundred dollars or two hundred dollars."

Should the prize be a gift card or an experience?

An experience. A $1,000 gift card means the winner has to sit there and think about what they'd buy with it. That's friction. A package they can picture beats it.

The example I used on one call: two nights at a water park hotel, a couple of dinners and a $200 gaming gift card. Nobody has to do any math. They just see the weekend.

Who pays for it?

The sponsor, and it costs them less than it sounds. If the sponsor builds the package from open inventory, like hotel rooms that would otherwise sit empty, $1,000 in value can cost them $500 or less.

How do you promote it?

Don't just post it on Instagram and hope. I'd put about $200 of Meta ads behind a giveaway over a week. That's also a selling point to the sponsor: I'm spending my money promoting your thing.

On Instagram, have people comment a keyword to enter. That keyword triggers ManyChat, which DMs them the entry details and a newsletter signup link.

What does the newsletter get out of it?

  • Subscribers. Entry runs through your signup.
  • Leads for the sponsor, which gives you a reason to sell the next giveaway.
  • Followers, if the flow ends on your Instagram page.

A guest on my podcast who was about 200 subscribers short of 5,000 told me he planned a giveaway plus a referral program, with a $500 gift card for his roofing company customers who refer friends. Different business, same instinct: make the reward big enough to matter.

Quick checklist

  1. Prize worth about $1,000, packaged as an experience.
  2. A sponsor using open inventory.
  3. Entry through your newsletter signup.
  4. About $200 of ads behind it for a week.
  5. A comment keyword wired to an auto-DM.
