Turning subscribers into revenue
When is the best time to survey a new newsletter subscriber?
Short answer
Right after they hit subscribe. People are about five times more engaged in that moment. I get over 50% completion when the survey sits immediately after signup, versus about 2% when it goes out in the welcome email.
The second someone subscribes is the most valuable moment you will ever have with them. Five minutes later, it's basically gone.
Completion rates I've seen
- Over 50% on my own surveys placed right after subscribe.
- 67% for a legacy local media client running Meta ads: 1,000 completed surveys out of 1,500 new subscribers.
- About 60% for a news client using a plain Google Form. Nothing fancy.
- About 2% when the same survey goes in the welcome email.
Some audiences will answer 10 to 12 questions if they believe they're getting real local deals in return.
Two build details that matter
- Save partial answers. If someone quits after three questions, push those three answers to your email platform anyway. A native form that drops incomplete submissions throws away data you already earned.
- Fix typos before you sync. Auto-correct broken email endings like ".comp" instead of dropping the subscriber.
This is the exact problem I built greetform to solve.
