Does SparkLoop work for local newsletters?
Short answer
Its classic newsletter-recommendation model doesn't, in my experience. Local readers don't want to sign up for other newsletters, which works mainly for B2B lists. In April 2026 SparkLoop shipped a welcome offer (survey first, then offers at signup) that's exactly what I wanted to build for local. I hadn't tested it yet.
I changed my mind on this, so here's both halves.
Why didn't it work for local at first?
"Sign up for another email is not a good strategy. I have tried this, and it does not work. You have to trust me. This only works for B2B newsletters."
SparkLoop's original model pays you when your new subscribers sign up for other newsletters it recommends. A fellow operator's B2B entrepreneur newsletter reportedly does well with it. But most local operators I heard from, me included, found it doesn't work for local. The reason is the audience: a local subscriber signed up to know what's happening in their town. They don't care about being recommended someone else's newsletter.
The same goes for the ad networks built into email platforms. Those advertisers are mostly B2B, so they're a poor fit for a local or senior consumer list.
What changed?
In April 2026 SparkLoop shipped a free welcome offer: a survey first, then offers at signup.
"They built it, it's exactly what I wanted to build. Exactly to a T."
My objection was never the concept. It was the product's form for a local audience. A survey followed by offers is the right shape. I flagged possible minor issues with the survey portion, and nothing had been tested when I said this.
Do paid recommendations ever pay for growth?
For some lists, yes. Guests on my show have shared real numbers:
- One said 50% to 70% of acquisition cost can come back from paid recommendations.
- Another laid out his stack: about $1.80 to acquire a subscriber against about $2.15 recovered. Roughly 80 cents from paid recommendations, about the same from lead gen, and 50 cents from a paid tripwire.
Those are their numbers and their audiences, mostly not local.
What works for local instead?
- One lead question sold to a local buyer. See how a signup flow pays for itself.
- Local deals on an offer wall.
- Your own paid plan or a donation ask.
Any disclosures?
Two. SparkLoop offered me an affiliate or ambassador fee. And I build greetform, which runs post-subscribe surveys and offers, so I have a horse in this race. Weigh my opinion with that in mind.
