How much can I afford to pay per newsletter subscriber on Meta ads?
Short answer
Work backward from what a subscriber earns you. For my own brands, I'd accept up to about $1.50 per subscriber, but only if the post-signup flow makes around $1 per subscriber. At 50 cents a subscriber, the first goal is just getting to break-even. Scale once the flow after signup recoups most of the cost.
A cost per subscriber is only cheap or expensive next to what a subscriber is worth to you.
"The only way we can justify spending $1.50 or whatever, hopefully less, but let's just call it $1.50 on Meta, is if we're making at least, hopefully, $1 per subscriber."
That's the ceiling I set for one of my own brands. It's a threshold tied to whether the onboarding flow can be monetized, not a measured yield.
What's the simple break-even math?
If a subscriber earns about 50 cents from welcome offers, and you pay around 50 cents to get them, acquisition pays for itself. Everything the newsletter earns after that is margin.
My advice to another operator was even simpler:
"At 50 cents a subscriber, just try to get to neutral."
When should I scale spend?
Once the post-subscribe flow recoups most of the cost. Not before. And in a small market, budget for fresh creative before more spend, since you'll burn through it faster.
What do other operators recover?
A guest on my podcast running paid growth for a non-local newsletter paid about $1.80 per subscriber and recovered about $2.15. He said the average newsletter recovers 50% to 70% of acquisition cost from paid recommendations, plus another 50% to 80% from brand offers. Those are his and his vendors' numbers, not mine.
What is a subscriber worth over time?
- A senior audience is the rare mix of cheap to reach and valuable to advertisers.
The money after signup comes from the survey and offers on the thank-you step. See post-subscribe offer walls and turning signups into paid leads.
