Why aren't my advertiser leads turning into sales?
Short answer
Usually because nobody called them. I got 250+ advertiser leads in two weeks from lead ads, and my partners and I called maybe 20. Most were mom-and-pops willing to pay small amounts. Fix the follow-up gap before you change the offer: call a set block of leads with a flat-price script.
"I probably have gotten 250 leads, maybe more in the last two weeks. And I wouldn't be shocked between all my partners if we've called like 20 of them."
That's the most common reason ad revenue looks broken. The leads are there. Nobody's calling.
Can Facebook ads find me newsletter advertisers?
Yes. I ran Meta lead-form ads aimed at local businesses and got that flood. But know what you're getting:
"These are usually the mom and pops that are filling these out. You're not going to get the long-term partner paying you a thousand bucks a month from ads like these. But we are getting people who want to pay, who are happy to pay even small amounts."
Another operator runs Facebook ads to book sales calls with advertisers. His numbers: about $50 per booked call, one in four closes, so about $200 per closed deal on $700 to $1,000 a month contracts. Estimates I've heard for booked calls run from $50 up to $400, at about a 30% close rate.
What should I do with 250 leads?
- Don't change the price yet. Weak revenue isn't evidence the offer is wrong if you haven't talked to anyone.
- Pick a block. Call a defined chunk of the list, not "some of them when I have time."
- Use a flat-price script. A guest's version: "About 10,000 people will see this on Monday, it's $300." No CPM.
- Follow up. Small business owners miss things.
Nothing closes without volume of contact.
Why does most inbound go nowhere?
Two reasons. Most inbound comes from companies with no money. The ones that do have money forget to email you back. I have legit companies that came to me, I responded with "let's talk," and they went silent.
Inbound alone won't build the business. Treat it as a bonus on top of outbound.
How do I get more inbound in the first place?
- A working "Advertise Here" link at the top of every issue. I found broken and missing ones across my own newsletters.
- A survey question that asks subscribers if they own a business.
- A media kit that sends automatically.
What's the warning sign I'm doing it wrong?
A guest warned about hyperlocal operators spending 80% of their time on sales for 20% of their revenue. That happens when every lead is a tiny one-off. The answer is the same: call the leads, but steer toward commitments and bigger buyers. See whether small month-to-month advertisers are worth it.
