Is cold email worth it for selling local newsletter ads?
Short answer
Not for a single town. The response is too small for the time and cost. Across many locations it can pay. If you do it, send about 20 a day from a warmed-up secondary domain, include an unsubscribe in every email, promise nothing free, and invite the owner to read the newsletter and talk.
"For those in just one location, I think cold email is probably just not worth it. The amount of time, effort, cost to do all of that, you're just not going to get enough of a response."
It may make sense for us, because we can run it across many locations at once. For one newsletter in one town, your hours are better spent elsewhere.
If I do send cold email, what are the rules?
These are the guardrails I set for our outreach system:
- About 20 a day, from a warmed-up secondary domain. Never your newsletter's sending domain.
- Unsubscribe in every email. No exceptions.
- Promise nothing free. No automatic "free business spotlight" offers.
- Make the ask small. Invite the owner to check out the newsletter, maybe subscribe, and be open to a conversation about promoting their brand.
Who should I email first?
Businesses already paying for ads. Another operator I follow described this: scout the print ads, the coupon books and the ad libraries, and you'll find businesses that already budget for local attention. They don't need convincing that advertising works. They need convincing that you're a better place for it.
Why don't small business owners reply?
Because they're buried. I ran a small business with up to 15 employees. The number of vendors I actually wanted to work with and never replied to, just because I was too busy, was huge. I'd wait for them to follow up.
Follow up. Silence usually isn't a no.
What does good manual outreach look like?
Benchmarks from people I talk to:
- One operator books about one meeting per ten cold dials, by telling businesses there's only one spot per category.
- A peer's manual push was about 20 calls in a week, which booked three meetings. Two didn't show.
That's normal. Outbound is a numbers game with lots of no-shows.
What about Instagram DMs?
They work, carefully. I DMed eight of twelve local custom home builders and stopped on purpose so Instagram wouldn't flag the account. Even though you could do 50 in 30 minutes, don't. Go vertical by vertical, one business type at a time, and start small.
Should I hire someone to do cold outreach for me?
Not before you've done it yourself. I paid a cold-calling contractor about $16,000 for my insurance newsletter before ever doing the process myself, and got zero results. Do the hard work first. It makes you a better manager later. More in whether to hire a salesperson first.
