How much money can a local newsletter make from ads?
Short answer
Low six figures a year at scale, if you're good at sales. That's my estimate. Operators I know with 11,000 to 25,000 subscribers make $7,500 to $25,000 a month. Ten category-exclusive sponsors at $1,000 a month is $120,000 a year. Most newsletters make far less because nobody sells.
"You can get to low six figures when you get to scale, if you're good at sales."
That's my honest ceiling for ad revenue on one local newsletter, and it's an estimate, not a measured result. Ads are great and can make money, but it's a grind.
What do real operators make?
| Operator | Audience | Monthly ad revenue |
|---|---|---|
| 21-year-old in Georgia | About 11,000 subscribers | $8,000 to $10,000 |
| 24-year-old in Canada, no sales background | Not shared | About $7,500 |
| Boise operator with a commission rep | 25,000 subscribers plus 40,000 Instagram followers | About $25,000 in a month |
| Operator who added sales fast | 10,000+ readers | Added $5,000 a month in 30 days |
All self-reported to me. All sales-first.
What's the math on a fully sold newsletter?
- Vertical-exclusive sponsors: $1,000 a month for 12 months, times 10 clients, is $120,000 a year.
- Restaurant deals section: $1,000 a year per restaurant, about 20 restaurants, caps around $20,000 a year.
- Bundled local media: with newsletter, website, social and print, I think my Williamson County audience of about 30,000 could do $5,000 to $10,000 a month.
The first two are plans, not results. The third is my estimate.
At $5,000 to $10,000 a month per brand, I could hire a local person in each market for about $1,500 a month.
Why do most local newsletters make far less?
Sales effort. By the benchmarks above, my own 30,000-subscriber county newsletter should earn $200,000 to $300,000 a year. In May 2026 I said that audience could support roughly $200,000 a year in ads. It was producing near zero, because I don't spend energy on sales. More in audience size vs sales effort.
Is selling ads the best way to monetize?
Not always. My better play is owning a business you can advertise in your own newsletter. One guest on my podcast made his own coffee shop the title sponsor. Ads work, but they're a grind.
