How much should a local newsletter charge for ads and sponsorships?

Short answer

Benchmarks I've seen work: about $700 a month on three-month-plus terms for a list near 11,000, and $250 to $500 or more for a flat placement on a post-subscribe page. Price for the reader you deliver. A business-owner audience justifies higher rates than a general one.

There's no rate card that fits every town. There are real numbers from real operators, and that's a better starting point than CPM math.

Prices I've seen close

  • Monthly sponsor: about $700 a month, three-month minimum, on a list around 11,000. That operator closes roughly 30% of advertiser calls.
  • Post-subscribe placement: a flat $250 to $500+ for a spot on the page new subscribers see right after signing up, plus separate per-lead pricing.
  • Print plus digital bundle: another operator sells postcard mailers to higher-income homes, about 16 slots per card at $250 to $400 a slot, packaged with a newsletter ad, an article, and a social post for $1,200 to $1,500 a month.
  • Done-for-you newsletter: I charge some local operators, mostly real estate agents, about $2,000 a month to run their newsletter for them as personal branding.
  • Franchise brands: my pitch to a multi-brand franchisor is a flat $1,000 to $2,000 a month across 10+ locations, no revenue share.

What it costs to land an advertiser

One operator runs Facebook ads to find advertisers: about $50 per booked call, one in four closes, so about $200 to land a $700 to $1,000 a month contract. At $200 to land a contract worth $700 or more every month, that math works.

Make the kit do the selling

I built media kits in three modes: standard, custom with the sponsor's name on it, and a proposal version to close after the sales call. The strongest piece is a scrollable preview of a real issue showing exactly where their ad appears.

The ad itself should look native: a small "Featured" label, an image, a link, and a short description. Think front-page placement, not a banner.
