How does category exclusivity work for newsletter sponsors?
Short answer
Sell one sponsor per category per year: one roofer, one bank, one realtor. That creates urgency without discounting, because if they pass the slot goes to a competitor. Add first right of refusal on renewal. Exclusivity gets more valuable in year two, when the audience is bigger and locking out a rival matters more.
Exclusivity is the cleanest way I know to create urgency without cutting your price. You're only selling to one roofer for the year. If this roofer doesn't take it, the next one might.
"If you don't take this, I might go to the guy who spends more, and if he signs it's only him for a year."
How do I structure an exclusive sponsorship?
- One partner per category per year. One bank, one roofer, one estate planner.
- First right of refusal on renewal. They get the first chance to re-sign before you offer it to anyone else.
- Multi-channel deliverables. Newsletter, website, social, and events as an upgrade.
Another operator I talk to sells a $1,000 a month, six-month package to 10,000+ readers with one advertiser per category. He books about one meeting per ten cold dials, and the line that does it is telling businesses only one spot per category is available.
Why does exclusivity matter more in year two?
It's almost like the exclusivity in year two is the bigger play.
"Right now you don't care if your roofing competitor gets it, but when I have 15,000 and the whole town is talking about it next year, your competitor cannot get it because you're just gonna pay me again, maybe up to 20% increase, and you're locking your competitor out."
In bigger categories, locking out competitors is what advertisers value most. The price of renewal goes up because the audience went up, and they pay it because the alternative is their rival in that spot.
Can exclusivity help the advertiser sell?
Yes. A realtor client taught me this one. She told prospective sellers: every other realtor will promise you this, this and this. I can do all of that, plus I'll put your home in front of 11,000 local people in a newsletter nobody else can be in. Exclusivity became her differentiator. I wouldn't have thought of that until she told me.
Tell advertisers they get to be in a newsletter nobody else in their category can be in. One deal from it can be worth ten times the sponsorship cost to them.
Can I sell exclusive and non-exclusive tiers at the same time?
Yes, and I like it. Run a mid-tier paid listing anyone can buy. You could have 20 roofers paying for it. Then sell an exclusive, term-limited "expert contributor" slot, one per category per city, as the VIP upsell. The cheap tier fills the directory. The exclusive tier is what the serious business wants.
When does exclusivity stop working?
When there's no demand. Exclusivity only creates urgency when a competitor might really take the slot. In a brand-new newsletter with no advertisers, "only one roofer" sounds like a line. Build the audience and fill some slots first, then the scarcity is real.
