Do I need polished videos to build an audience on YouTube?
Short answer
No. For most people in most niches, just jump on and start talking. Don't spend energy on your background or editing; rough production can make you more human. Pick a specific niche, show real work, and let search do the rest. Two inbound leads found me through my content before my YouTube channel even launched.
"The answer for most people in most niches is don't even think about it and just jump on and start talking. Don't spend any energy on professionalism or your background."
It can actually help you. Rough makes you more human.
What should the videos look like?
A creator I interviewed films casual 10 to 15 minute talks in whatever room he's in. No fancy editing. Just chit-chat and real knowledge. I tell local operators to copy that.
Forget the Mr. Beast playbook of grabbing attention every three seconds. You're not trying to attract those viewers anyway. Be you and share what you know.
My own preferred style: unscripted, live, demo-first. "Show me what you built today."
What should I make videos about?
Specific, real work. My plan is a channel positioned as AI for media brands, with simple walkthroughs like connecting Claude to Beehiiv. A peer of mine posts videos connecting Claude to QuickBooks and Jobber, and that drew inbound from big companies.
Every company is becoming a media company, so a niche like AI for media brands is narrow enough to target and broad enough to grow.
How does YouTube turn into clients?
- Post specific content showing how to do real work.
- The algorithm and search put it in front of people looking for exactly that.
- Some of them reach out. You convert the inbound into clients.
Two inbound leads found me purely through content I'd already posted, before the channel launched. That's what convinced me the flywheel is real.
How do I get more out of each video?
Make one anchor video and turn it into everything else. For a niche authority play I'd cover every angle: a YouTube channel, a newsletter, Facebook pages, a Facebook group. Build automations that turn each video into newsletter content and page posts.
"Bombard the internet with you being the guy for a niche."
The industry I think this would crush most in is insurance.
Is it too late?
Not yet. I think the opportunity is incredible at least through 2026, and it gets harder around 2027. Depending on your vertical, pair it with paid ads heavily, lightly or somewhere in between.
