How do I sell newsletter advertising to franchises?

Short answer

Two ways. Franchisees are often required to spend a monthly amount on local ads, commonly $500 to $1,000 or more, so they'll spend it with someone they like. Or go to the franchisor: one deal to test newsletters across 10+ locations at a flat $1,000 to $2,000 a month, no revenue cut, activates many locations at once.

Franchises are one of the best advertiser types for a local newsletter because the money already has to be spent.

Why are franchisees easy advertisers?

Franchise agreements commonly require franchisees to spend a monthly amount on local advertising. That's often $500 to $1,000 or more, higher in home services. It's going to be spent with somebody.

"The middle tier are these franchises that have to spend money."

Unlike a mom-and-pop, a franchisee isn't deciding whether to advertise. They're deciding where. Be the place they like. I had an AI double-check that local ad spend requirements are common in franchise agreements, and it also pointed to regional ad co-ops as another door.

How do I find franchisees in my area?

  • List the franchise locations in your coverage area. Home services are a good start, since their required spend tends to run higher.
  • Ask how they handle their local ad requirement and whether there's a co-op.
  • Pitch the newsletter as an easy, local way to meet it.

What's the franchisor pitch?

Go above the franchisee. My plan: find one multi-brand home-service franchisor willing to test the newsletter model across 10 or more locations.

  • Flat $1,000 to $2,000 a month.
  • No revenue percentage.
  • Positioned as the anti-predatory deal. The opposite of franchise models that take a cut of everything.

One franchisor deal activates many locations at once. That's the whole appeal. It's a strategy I've laid out, not a signed deal.

Which groups are lower priority?

Retirement-home chains and similar groups. They lack one invested stakeholder who owns the decision. Large membership organizations could be complementary, but my LinkedIn outreach to them stalled at people who couldn't say yes. Find the person who owns the budget.

Can I borrow the franchise model for my own sales?

Partly. The free direct-mail magazines are franchises, and they've proven local businesses will pay for local attention. More on that in bundling print with your newsletter.
