How do you find marketing and growth ideas that actually work for a local business?
Short answer
Copy what already works nationally or in another niche, then do it locally where nobody is doing it. That's basically the whole local newsletter model. And when competitors copy you badly and it still works, that's a signal: if a B-minus version works, an A-minus version should work better.
"My strategy is always to find things that work nationally or in other niches that we can just apply locally that nobody is doing."
The local newsletter itself is this idea. Someone was doing it nationally. We took the same concept and did it local.
How do you find the idea?
- Look for something close to what you want to do, or something in a different industry, that's clearly working.
- Niche it down, usually by location.
- Ask: is anyone doing this here?
B2B newsletters are one of the places I look.
What's an example?
The public tag loop for a local directory:
- Comment on a local business's win with a branded, link-free tag.
- Turn that into a roundup entry and a newsletter blurb.
- Notify the owner.
- Funnel them into a free directory listing, then a paid $49 a month Pro listing.
Sharing business owners' info on our website is a golden opportunity because a website has unlimited space. My limit is capacity, so I sort ideas into viable today versus viable after another hire.
What if competitors copy you?
Take it as a compliment and a clue. An agency copied my text-over-background-video ad concept with a boring background and weak copy.
"If doing worse than us is working, even on a small scale, what if we do it great?"
Most people are doing B-minus or C-level work. If you can do A-minus work, you win on execution: better backgrounds, clearer text.
Where else does this pattern apply?
Anywhere a growth skill set isn't common yet. Local media was a gap because publishers were anti-Meta ads. The same pattern shows up in nonprofits (donor campaigns), universities (alumni giving), trade associations and insurance lead gen. Insurance lead gen is, by my estimate, a $10 to $50 billion a year market where carriers buy verified leads.
Learn the growth stack (Meta ads, funnels, cold email, automation) and point it where the outcome is direct dollars, not just awareness.
