Should I use Beehiiv's built-in survey or build my own signup survey?
Short answer
I moved off Beehiiv's built-in survey. With it my brands averaged roughly 40% to 50% completion. With my own one-question-per-page survey they average 65% to 75%. The built-in one shows a long form and, in my experience, wouldn't let me edit questions after launch. A free Google Form placed right after subscribe is a fine cheap start.
On Beehiiv's built-in survey, my brands averaged around 40%, maybe 50% on the high end. After switching to my own survey, they average 65% to 70%, sometimes 75%. That's 20 points or more of lift.
"We were probably averaging 40, maybe 50% on the high end with the Beehiiv survey. Now we're averaging 65, 70, sometimes 75% fill out rate."
What's wrong with the built-in survey?
- It looks like one long form. People see it and a lot of them think it's too much. Forms that show one question at a time feel less overwhelming.
- Editing was a problem. In my experience, you couldn't change a survey after you made it. Any edited word effectively made it a brand-new survey. That's why my older brands never got the business-owner question.
- It drops partial answers. My setup at the time withheld incomplete submissions, so someone who quit halfway gave me nothing.
- It can't easily chain into offers. I wanted ad, signup, survey, then offers in one flow.
To be fair, the built-in survey placed right after subscribe still crushes any survey sent by email. One early Beehiiv list of mine had 87% completion. Placement matters more than the tool. The tool is the next 20 points.
Can a custom form still send people into Beehiiv?
Yes. I confirmed with Beehiiv that a custom form can push subscribers to the Beehiiv API and trigger the welcome email the same as if they'd used a Beehiiv landing page. ActiveCampaign can work the same way if its API covers what you need.
What are the cheap options?
| Option | Notes |
|---|---|
| Google Form | Free. A news client got around 60% completion with one placed right after subscribe. |
| Paperform | A nicer-looking form tool I found at a conference. |
| A purpose-built tool | One question per page, partial saves, offers after the survey, sync to your email platform. That's what I built greetform to do. |
Can you change questions after launch with a custom survey?
Absolutely. Try to get it right the first time, then change it as you learn. A new question just has fewer answers on file, because earlier subscribers never saw it.
Your survey and your ads are also independent. You can change either one without touching the other.
What's the risk of going custom?
If your custom page runs the subscribe step itself, a bug can break your whole funnel. Test the full flow end to end, on several devices, before you send ad traffic to it. I wanted at least a day of multi-device testing before one launch.
